I once got fired for sleeping in a box.

I was a college kid working the graveyard shift at a mill, and I hated every minute of it. So on my breaks I climbed up to the crates stacked near the warehouse ceiling, crawled inside one, and took a nap. Then I figured out that if I just stayed in the box, nobody noticed I was gone. I used more creativity figuring out how to sleep than I ever used doing the job.

Until the day somebody looked up and saw a box moving all by itself.

I went through five jobs that year, and I was sure it was the devil. Then a pastor pulled me aside and said, "Lance, your problem isn't that you can't work. You just haven't found your work. When you find your work, you will be a tiger."

I never forgot those words. And they're the doorway into this teaching.

The World Wins Where the Church Doesn't

Here's something that bothers a lot of believers. Why does the world so often outperform the church? Because the world does what the church doesn't. They master their field. They plan. They measure. They show up early. Meanwhile, too many Christians try to spiritualize their way around the basics, confessing prosperity instead of getting up and going to work.

I've been there. But here's the good news. Once you get on a level playing field with the world, you carry something the world will never have.

Daniel had it. Scripture says an excellent spirit was found in him. The Hebrew word means "that which juts out further." The Greek word for excellence means "to throw beyond." That's the excellent spirit: the anointing meeting you at the point where you match the world and throwing you beyond it. Daniel ended up over every magician and astrologer in Babylon, consulted by king after king, because his gift cluster of knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, and solving riddles had been defined, developed, and demonstrated.

God is raising up a Daniel in every Babylon and a Joseph in every Egypt, in every one of the seven world kingdoms, from finance to art to politics. The question is whether you'll pay the price to be one of them.

When I walked away from a promising consulting career to serve in a church that met above an auto body shop, my father told me I would "make bricks without straw." That was a generational spirit speaking. God had to deliver me, and He started by sending me to clean out my library.

Years later, the Lord sent me back to the very tools I had thrown out. Here's why. Every sacred article in Moses' tabernacle came out of the plunder of Egypt. It was washed, then set apart for holy use. You can raid Babylon. You just can't do it while Babylon is still in you.

That's why God processes you in Potiphar's house and in prison before He brings you before Pharaoh. He's building a character strong enough to carry the anointing, so that when it takes you places your flesh never could, there's no fault line in you to crack.

And if you're in your forties wondering where the years went, God promises to restore what the locust has eaten. The world can't claim that promise. You can.
